The biggest ever single UK public investment in bioenergy research has been announced today (27 January) by the main funding agency for the biosciences the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

The £27M BBSRC Sustainable Bioenergy Centre (BSBEC) has been launched to provide the science to underpin and develop the important and emerging UK sustainable bioenergy sector and to replace the petrol in our cars with fuels derived from plants.

Sustainable bioenergy offers the potential to provide a significant source of clean, low carbon and secure energy, and to generate thousands of new green collar jobs. It uses non-food crops, such as willow, industrial and agricultural waste products and inedible parts of crops, such as straw, and so does not take products out of the food chain.

EnviroMission Limited (www.enviromission.com.au) produced this 5 minute video on the pilot plant in Spain. It is an older video (2000) but gives a decent understanding of the solar tower concept.

A single 200MW Solar Tower power station will provide enough electricity to power around 400,000 households. The energy output will represent an annual saving of more than 1,960,000 tonnes of greenhouse CO2 gases from entering the environment when compared to brown coal emissions in Victoria. The greenhouse savings equate to the removal of approximately 500,000 cars from the road. The Australian Solar Tower project consists of six distinct phases, the first two of which (project optimization and pre-feasibility commercialization) have already been completed. The third phase (final feasibility), paving the way for the implementation of the next three phases (final design, construction, and commercial operation).

A video based on biomass energy as a replacement for fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline. Fossil fuels when burned in homes and vehicles the emissions cause greenhouse gases to build up in the atmosphere which effects the ozone layer and cause climate change and global warming. Global warming causes ocean water levels to rise which causes floods and droughts in some areas. Long term climate change can effect storms causing them to be extreme. Biomass energy and products are produce less greenhouse gas emissions and help maintain a healthy enviroment. The video was created for Natural Science which is an environmental study course at the collegiate level.
